If any one knows how to make effective leaders, it's the Marines. I'm not a leadership expert, but I learned my leadership skills at one of the best leadership schools around- Officer Candidate School for the United States Marine Corps. They aren't about creating leaders, they are about manipulating followers. Just reading through a few of those 'Rules' makes me want to puke. His argument was 'isn't that essentially what is happening in most Lodges already?' I don't know if a Lodge can be united along these principles as much as become a sycophantic cult of personality behind a strong leader. His response was that there is an ethos contained in these laws and that an officer corps united on these principles working against the negative aspects within the Lodge and within their community is essentially bringing the right weapons to the fight that the weapons mastered in more traditional leadership development are ill-equipped to handle the challenges facing modern Lodges. My argument to him was that, at first blush, it didn't seem like ethical and pragmatic leadership. A primer on these laws can be found here. I recently had a discussion with a Mason who said that the most overlooked and useful book for him for learning to best effect change within his Lodge was Robert Greene's 'The 48 Laws of Power,' a book that reads like a more street-level 'Art of War' by Sun Tzu and is one that is much loved in American prisons.
